This guest lecture, presented by Saskia Manshoven, a researcher in Circular Economy at VITO, explored the transition from fast fashion to sustainable and circular fashion systems. It addressed the environmental and social impacts of the current linear economy, emphasizing the urgent need for change in the fashion industry.
Key strategies for achieving circularity include:
Design-for-repair and durability: Ensuring garments can be repaired and have a longer lifespan.
Recycling and remanufacturing: Prioritizing fiber recycling and minimizing production waste.
Material innovation: Promoting renewable fibers and reducing microplastic emissions.
Consumer practices: Encouraging second-hand shopping, clothing rentals, and mindful consumption habits.
A highlight of the presentation was the True Cost Calculator, which helps designers and sustainability managers make informed decisions by factoring in the environmental costs of garment production and disposal. For me, as someone passionate about pattern making, the focus on zero-waste designs and quality construction resonated strongly, showcasing how thoughtful design can extend garment lifespans.
