Couture Specialization Track

The Couture Specialization Track provides an introduction to the key techniques and practices of couture, focusing on pattern making, draping, and sewing. The course involves creating a tailored corset, a skirt, and a dress, with an emphasis on precision and detailed finishing. Students work on refining essential skills such as constructing structured garments, applying hand-stitching techniques, and achieving clean, professional finishes. While foundational in nature, the course offers valuable insights into the craftsmanship and patience required for high-quality garment production.

For me, this track is an opportunity to solidify my pattern-making skills and improve my sewing techniques, areas I’ve always wanted to strengthen. I’ve struggled with achieving neat and consistent finishes, and this course offers the chance to practice under guidance. The projects will challenge me to pay closer attention to detail, particularly in the construction of structured garments like corsets, which demand accuracy and precision. While the scope is modest, the skills I’ll gain will serve as a strong foundation for more advanced work in the future.

The course also offers me a chance to study the techniques of some of my biggest inspirations, such as Cristóbal Balenciaga and Charles James, under the guidance of an instructor. Their work is known for impeccable craftsmanship and innovative approaches to volume and structure—qualities I hope to explore in my own designs. Having a mentor to help analyze and experiment with these methods will allow me to deepen my understanding in a focused, practical way.

One of the most appealing aspects of this track is the emphasis on slowing down and approaching garments with care. Unlike faster-paced design projects, couture demands patience and thoughtful execution. This aligns with my personal goal of learning to work more methodically and gaining confidence in handling more delicate materials. Developing these habits is essential for any designer aiming to produce high-quality, polished work.

The course’s focus on technical fundamentals makes it a practical addition to my education. Learning to create structured garments like corsets and dresses will provide me with tools I can apply across various types of projects, whether in tailoring, eveningwear, or experimental designs.
